Rangers boss Ally McCoist has held positive talks with Nikica Jelavic regarding his future in Glasgow, as Newcastle reportedly pursue the striker.

The 26-year-old Croatian was also a summer target for Leicester City, with the Foxes having a formal offer in excess of £6 million rejected by Rangers.

And, despite the interest of Newcastle and others, McCoist is confident Jelavic is entirely focused on the job in hand and Ibrox, and has now desire to leave the club.

"Yes, I had a conversation with Nikica this afternoon and, while I won’t go into details about a private discussion, I don’t mind telling you that I heard everything I wanted to hear from him," the Rangers legend told the Daily Record.

“You do worry that players heads can be turned in situations such as this but there is no doubt in my mind that Nikica Jelavic wants to be a Rangers player.

“Needless to say I’m delighted to still have him because he is vital to what we are trying to achieve.”

Newcastle, it has been claimed, made an enquiry as to the availability of Jelavic prior to the close of the transfer window, but saw their approach dismissed.

The Toon have since been tipped to return with an official offer in January as Alan Pardew looks to add another striker to his ranks.
