Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew made a personal check on Swiss striker Eren Derdiyok Tuesday night.
The Bayer Leverkusen forward is the latest in a line of attackers to be linked with a move to St. James' Park, after Pardew failed to snare any of his top targets in the position this summer.
Mevlut Erding, Papiss Demba Cisse and Bryan Ruiz were all thought to be on the Toon radar ahead of the August 31st transfer deadline, but the players either stayed at their current clubs or moved elsewhere on a frustrating period for the Newcastle United boss.
In response, the Newcastle chief has already began his search for players months in advance of the January transfer window, with Derdiyok and compatriot Xherdan Shaqiri two players on the Magpies' radar.
23-year-old Derdiyok has scored 18 goals in 65 matches for the Bundesliga side, enhancing his credentials since moving from FC Basel in 2009.
It's unclear how much the striker would cost Newcastle United should they wish to pursue their interest in the New Year.
