Wigan have opened contract talks with youngster Victor Moses and several other leading players.

The 20-year-old, signed from Crystal Palace for £2.5million in February 2010, has the best part of two seasons still to run on his present deal but manager Roberto Martinez wants to put a new long-term arrangement in place.

The Nigerian-born forward has impressed in the opening three games of the Barclays Premier League campaign and the Spaniard said: "I wanted to make sure once the transfer window closed that we went through players in the last years of their contracts, and players that need to get a reward for what they have achieved."

He added: "We are going through many players in the next few weeks and Victor is one of them. We have got a couple of players in the final years of their contracts and we are going to start talking to make sure everyone knows where they are.

"We have said we want to achieve this season and take things further. I want the players to know where the next targets are individually in their careers. We have got a few young players with big roles and it is important we get stability in their careers and they can concentrate on football.

"Victor Moses is very much in that category. He only wants to concentrate on football and the level of football he has shown in starting the first three games has been really, really good. It is now time to kick on."

Martinez strengthened his squad by bringing in three new players in the final two days of the summer transfer window last week.

Scotland forward Shaun Maloney was brought in from Celtic for £1million, Spanish winger Albert Crusat arrived from Almeria and Holland Under-21 defender Patrick van Aanholt signed on a season-long loan from Chelsea.

Martinez said: "They have come in with a real desire to be here and first and foremost that is something we were looking for. The players that come to Wigan Athletic need to have a real hunger for wanting to join the football club.

"I can tell you Albert, Shaun and Patrick bring in something completely different. Now the competition for places is really strong.
