Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler believes he could still sign free agent Kevin Lisbie, despite the experienced striker training with an unnamed Npower Championship club.

Lisbie - a Gills fan - is unattached having been released by Ipswich at the end of last season, and reports have claimed he would not be prepared to drop down to Npower League Two.

Hessenthaler, however, says that is not the case, and remains optimistic that the 32-year-old could make a move to Priestfield.

"I'd like to put the record straight for Kevin because I have actually had a conversation with him this week," Hessenthaler explained.

"He phoned me on Tuesday evening because I think he was a little bit distressed and disappointed with some of the press stories that have come out claiming he wasn't prepared to drop down to League Two.

"I actually hadn't seen the press reports because I don't read the papers, but the lad has been terrific.

"He phoned me out of decency, because he knows me, to say that isn't the case. He would be prepared to come down to this level but at the moment he wants to keep his options open."

Hessenthaler added: "He told me he is a Gillingham fan and I believe he is."
