After continuous speculation throughout the summer, Rennes have finally confirmed that Arsenal tabled a bid for midfielder Yann M'Vila.

The €30 million offer would have smashed the Gunners' club record transfer fee, but the Ligue 1 side held firm to keep hold of the French international.

However, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was again handed hope of landing the player next summer, when Frederic Antonetti expects the 21-year-old to leave the club.

"There were big deals for M'Vila. Arsenal, the four big Champions League teams...the offers were around €30 million," Antonetti is quoted as saying in French website topmercato.com.

"We are happy to keep him one more season. In line with things, he is scheduled to leave next season, but you never."

Wenger turned his attentions to Mikel Arteta and Yossi Benayoun in an effort to strengthen his Arsenal midfield after failing to lure the player from the Route de Lorient.

However, the Gunners failed to bring a defensive midfielder to the Emirates in the mould of M'Vila, and are tipped to return for the player at the end of the season. Arsenal can expect a battle for the signature though, with Barcelona now being linked, as Antonetti suggested in his comments.
