Alan Pardew admits he was disappointed not to get the striker he so wanted in the transfer window, but feels there is enough firepower in the Newcastle squad for now.
Overall, the Magpies have strengthened with the addition of seven new signings, but the lack of a striker addition means it gives opportunity for one of Pardew's current crop to step up to the plate, and prolong their unbeaten start to the season.
"As a squad and staff we are disappointed that a striker did not arrive," he confirmed. "But the pool of strikers underneath it all are probably quite pleased.
"The guys who were here last year are all here, and we have [Hatem] Ben Arfa coming into the squad as he is training again, so we are slightly better off than we were last year in the striking department.
"They all did terrific for me last year, and I will be leaning on them again. For them it is an opportunity to try and establish themselves as a Newcastle player. One or two of them, Leon Best in particular, will be striving for that.
"We've got some experience with Shola [Ameobi] and Peter Lovenkrands, so we have options which will see us through.
"It is just about getting the goals now, and it will be important that people step up to the plate, come out of the pack, score goals and contribute to goals. There is certainly enough talent in the squad to do that."
The Newcastle boss was quick to reiterate that there are plenty of things to be positive about at St. James' Park this season, with three wins from their firs four games in league and cup competition - proof that he is not being overly optimistic.
"The squad has improved in terms of the size and quality," continued Pardew. "At times last year I looked round at the bench and I didn't think it was strong enough.
"This year it certainly is, and we've now probably got competition to get on to the bench, which is very welcome. We are going into the unknown to a certain degree because a lot of the goals we created and scored last year are not in this team.
"But we have got a lot of new talent, and that new talent is exciting. They have shown that in the opening games, and we will be leaning on them to make us look a little bit different and to create a different type of goal.
"Within the squad there is a real camaraderie, a real strong spirit, and defensively we have shown we are a real tight unit."
