Danny Carlton struck a hat-trick as Morecambe inflicted a stunning 6-0 defeat on title favourites Crawley to take over at the top of the npower League Two table.

Promoted Crawley started the day in first place but they dropped to fourth after being overrun by Morecambe, who netted twice in the opening 22 minutes through Carlton and Nick Fenton.

The home side then added four more goals after the break, Carlton completing his treble with efforts that sandwiched a Kevin Ellison goal before Laurence Wilson wrapped up the scoring from the penalty spot in the 84th minute.

Morecambe are the new front-runners, although Rotherham are level with them on 16 points after bouncing back from their opening defeat of the season at Swindon last time out with a 3-1 home triumph over Dagenham & Redbridge.

Scott Doe's 21st-minute goal cancelled out Gareth Evans' early opener for Rotherham, but the hosts struck twice more before half-time through Lewis Grabban to ensure the points would be staying with them.

Shrewsbury are third after claiming a 3-1 derby win over Hereford.

Goals from Marvin Morgan and Mark Wright put Shrewsbury 2-0 up before they suffered a scare when they had Terry Gornell sent off in the 62nd minute and Hereford pulled a goal back nine minutes later through Tom Barkhuizen.

However, Morgan netted his second in the 79th minute to clinch the three points for the hosts.

Cheltenham moved into the top five with a 2-0 home win over Macclesfield, with Jeff Goulding's first-half penalty setting them on their way before James Spencer added a second late on.
