Johnson upbeat after draw

Northampton are still searching for their first home victory of the campaign but boss Gary Johnson claimed his did more than enough to claim a win against Torquay following a goalless draw.

Although the Gulls extended their unbeaten run in the Sixfields' stalemate, it was Cobblers who had the best chances to take all three points with Adebayo Akinfenwa heading over twice, and Ben Tozer wasting a great opportunity in the final minute.

"We just couldn't score," said a frustrated Johnson. "We put out a team to create opportunities and you just hope that one of them goes in. But it wasn't to be and, although we looked far more solid, we had every chance of winning the game but missed too many opportunities."

He added: "We were much better in front of our own fans and the players showed a lot more effort.

"We were only one goal away from it being a perfect home performance but it just means that now we have to concentrate on getting points away from home in our next two games.

"It's still early days, no-one is pulling away at the top and all the teams are beating each other. We are lower in the table than where I want us to be but there's still a long way to go."

Torquay boss Martin Ling was satisfied to see his side extend their unbeaten run although he conceded they were not at their sharpest.

"I think a draw was a fair result. It was a professional performance from us to get a result here but we weren't anywhere near as effective as we have been recently," said Ling.

"We knew there was pressure on Northampton with them not winning at home so we tried to make the most of that in the first half and get the crowd on their backs.

"We had a couple of good chances in the game, but, in the second half, Northampton created some good opportunities and, in the end, I'm happy with a draw."
