Wenger maintains European trophy ambition

Arsene Wenger believes that Arsenal are capable of winning the Champions League, but for now, the side are concentrating on their tie with Borussia Dortmund.

Despite being Bundesliga champions last season, Dortmund were in the pot of lowest seeds for the group stage draw. But with the match being played out in Germany tonight, Wenger insists Arsenal are taking the game and their progression in the competition very seriously.

“I wouldn't rule it out yet,” he said of wining the Champions League. “But it’s too early to speak about winning it.

“Saying that would raise a lot of scepticism about the team at the moment and I don't think any one would believe it.

“But we have to do as well as we can and we have to form a team in the next two months. It's too early to have that kind of ambition.”

Wenger believes that the group stages will give the Gunners a chance to show that their new look squad is capable of going further in the Champions League than their round of 16 exit last season.

“For us, it's a new start because we are a new squad,” the manager said.  "And what is at stake during the group stages for us is to show that we can go through.

"They have shown they can win it so, at the moment, it's too early to compare us to them."
