Njogu Demba-Nyren is training with Gillingham and currently unattached after Notts County allowed his contract to expire at the end of last season.

The 32-year-old is out to impress Andy Hessenthaler and earn a deal with Gills, and the manager confirmed they were watching the player closely to Kent News: “He’s been training with us and we’ll have a look at him.

“He played for West Ham and it didn’t work out there for him, the level was too much.”

Demba-Nyren has also played in Denmark, Norway and Bulgaria, before finishing last season with the Magpies. The front man scored just one goal in 12 appearances for the club, but is hoping his luck will change at Priestfield.

His international career has seen him earn 11 caps, scoring three goals for Gambia.

The manager gave no clues over the player's chances of securing a place in the squad, but the Gills have a friendly match against Ipswich coming up where the player will get a chance to shine.

“In training he’s looked okay but you never really know until you see them in a real match.”
