Newcastle are now chasing Southampton striker Rickie Lambert, The Sun claims, with the north-east club hoping to sign the 29-year-old as soon as the January transfer window opens.
Lambert has scored 56 goals in 96 appearances for Southampton, and with the club currently doing surprisingly well in the npower Championship after being promoted from League One last season, the striker has attracted attention from numerous clubs.
And after Newcastle were unable to land a striker in the summer window, Alan Pardew has made it his number one priority in January to do so.
With Lambert’s age, Newcastle are reportedly not likely to offer a long-term contract, and could work out a deal that includes incentives for the Englishman to perform.
And with Newcastle becoming more and more desperate to find a replacement for the departed Andy Carroll, Lambert is looking like an affordable possibility at £5 million, the paper reports.
