Villas-Boas and Ferguson react to match

Andre Villas-Boas has defended Fernando Torres following the striker’s glaring miss in Chelsea’s 3-1 defeat at Manchester United yesterday.

The Spanish international rounded United keeper David De Gea late in the game, but contrived to shoot wide with an open goal at his mercy.

But the Chelsea manager refused to blame Torres, instead saving his ire for the officials, who failed to give offside for two of United’s goals.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson had his own opinions after the match, slamming Ashley Cole’s late tackle on Javier Hernandez.

But Ferguson also expressed delight at his own side’s performance as the Red Devils maintained their 100% start to the league campaign.

Arsene Wenger sought the take the positives from his side’s performance following Arsenal’s disappointing 4-3 defeat at Blackburn on Saturday.

But he conceded their defensive display was not good enough, lamenting a ‘frustrating’ game in which the Gunners threw away a 2-1 lead.

Gareth Bale has reaffirmed his commitment to Tottenham, insisting he will be staying at White Hart Lane regardless of any offers in January.

Andre Villas-Boas has admitted that Nicolas Anelka is likely to leave Stamford Bridge next summer, with Paris Saint-Germain interested.

And finally, Arsenal and Liverpool are rivaling each other for the signing of highly rated 18-year-old Valencia forward Paco Alcacer.
