Alex McLeish lost his grip on the Carling Cup as second-half goals from Chris Eagles and Gael Kakuta sealed a 2-0 victory for Bolton over Aston Villa in a third-round tie.

McLeish, who guided Birmingham to the trophy last season, could have few complaints at the outcome as Eagles and Kakuta confirmed the Trotters superiority.

Bolton boss Owen Coyle made nine changes but his side were still dominant in inflicting a first defeat of the campaign on a Villa side which was close to full strength.
