Wenger dismisses new signing claims

Arsene Wenger has rejected claims that he should add a defensive coach to his ranks in order to tighten his leaky defence.

There have been calls in recent days for the Frenchman to sign up former captain Tony Adams or ex-Gunner Martin Keown, but Wenger does not agree.

"I have just completed 30 years of coaching," said the Arsenal boss when the question was put to him. "I don't want to answer this kind of question."

Despite Wenger moving to reinforce his defence during the transfer window, the frailties of the Arsenal backline are still clearly evident.

The Gunners manager added Per Mertesacker and Andre Santos to his ranks in the summer but Arsenal still continue to ship goals at an alarming rate.

After the 8-2 pummelling at the hands of Manchester United, Blackburn then further embarrassed Arsenal with a 4-3 triumph at Ewood Park.

Yakubu scored a brace for Rovers, while Arsenal twice put into their own net, with Mertesacker and Santos failing to leave a positive impression.
