Fresh twist in Chelsea pursuit of £9m Dutchman - reports

Roma have entered the running for Chelsea target Gregory van der Wiel, it has been claimed.

According to talkSPORT, the Italian giants have set aside £9 million to sign van der Wiel in January, although the Blues are still said to retain an interest in the Holland international.

The 23-year-old has previously been linked with Manchester United and Tottenham, but Chelsea are thought to be the Ajax defender's most serious admirers.

It was consistently reported in the summer that Andre Villas-Boas was keen to bring van der Wiel to Stamford Bridge, although it is unclear if Chelsea made an attempt to sign him.

However, a New Year bid could be in the offing as the Chelsea boss scours the market for reinforcements at full-back, having missed out on Álvaro Pereira during the transfer window.

Villas-Boas wants more competition for places in wide defensive areas while, it has been reported, the Portuguese is looking for a more capable alternative to current Chelsea right-back Jose Bosingwa.
