The agent of Tottenham target Giuseppe Rossi has confirmed Napoli made contact with Villarreal over the proposed signing of the Italian striker.
Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis repeatedly stated over the summer that he wanted to bring Rossi to the Stadio San Paolo in order to bolster his already fearsome strikeforce.
And, says Federico Pastorello, there was a dialogue between the two clubs, although it is unclear whether or not a formal bid was ever made.
He told Radio Kiss Kiss: “As far as we know, the two clubs contacted each other, but did not speak directly with us."
Spurs, meanwhile, had attempted to sign Rossi during the January transfer window, and were also keen to follow up their interest in the summer.
Harry Redknapp confirmed Spurs had lodged an £18 million offer for the 24-year-old and that he 'almost' moved to White Hart Lane.
When it became clear Spurs would not be able to afford to sign Rossi, Redknapp instead turned his attention to Emmanuel Adebayor.
