Gavin Mahon hopes to earn an extended contract at Notts County until the end of the season.

The midfielder joined the Magpies last month on a pay-as-you-play deal until the start of January. After missing the best part of two years due to injury, Mahon has surpassed expectations by starting the club's last six league matches.

Manager Martin Allen last week admitted he had been impressed by the 34-year-old's impact and Mahon is keen to remain part of the squad. "I have spoken to the manager about staying until the end of the season and I would like to, so if something happens I will be happy," Mahon told the Evening Post.

"I am really enjoying my football again after being out with a long-term injury for the first time in my career.

"I don't want to look too far ahead, but this team has got a chance of achieving something. Looking at the foundation we have got and the squad we have got we can go a long way.

"We have showed we can play well against some of the best teams in the division, so we have to keep our belief and mentality and see where it takes us."
