Leeds United are waiting for a response from Jonny Howson after offering their captain a new deal reports skysports.com.

The 23-year-old midfielder is in the last twelve months of his existing contract, and could leave the club for nothing in the summer, so Simon Grayson is eager to extend his deal.

Elland Road chief executive Shaun Harvey explained that the club had opened negotiations with the Leeds captain at the start of September, and that they were waiting for a response from him, or his representatives.

"Discussions have been ongoing for a period of time and since the transfer window shut," he confirmed. "We've made an offer to Jonny and we're waiting for a response.

"Discussions with all of those players who we'd want - and who you'd expect us to want - to keep beyond the end of their existing contracts have taken place or will commence shortly."

Howson signed a new Leeds contract after their Npower League One play-off final defeat in 2008, which was automatically extended following the Whites' promotion to the Championship last year.
