Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson is keen to see both Steven Gerrard and Craig Bellamy employed from the start against Everton in the weekend's Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

Gerrard has made cameo appearances against Brighton & Hove Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers since returning from a groin injury, whilst Bellamy has made just a single start for the Reds since his deadline day move from Manchester City.

Despite the pair's limited appearances this season, Lawrenson would like the pair to be employed in an attack minded Liverpool starting XI.

"I would play Steven from the start because of the effect he has on so many different players in that team," he said.

"The midfield is the key area and the quality which comes from there will make the difference.

"Craig Bellamy played so well at Brighton in the Carling Cup, and has had time to rest his knee, so would be a good choice to start," he added.

"He is so, so quick and will be able to buy space for Luis Suarez - he makes the pitch bigger.

"If you're Jagielka and Distin, though both very quick to recover, you'd have concerns about facing Bellamy.

"Should Gerrard thread a ball through then in a straight race, Bellamy is not coming second many times."
