Megson hails Wednesday desire

Gary Megson praised his players' hunger after they earned a third successive victory with a 1-0 win at Hartlepool.

Reda Johnson's 33rd-minute header inflicted on Hartlepool their first league defeat of the season but The Owls, who move above Pools into a play-off spot, were made to work for their victory.

Since losing 5-1 at Stevenage, Megson's side have regrouped and the boss said: "It was a battle and we get games like that one over a season. At times you look back at the result and appreciate it later. But saying that we had opportunities to get a second."

He added: "Our centre-halves and the lads at the side won everything and the second balls. I didn't really feel we were in danger, but you wonder if anything could drop."

Pools went into the game on the back of five successive victories, but coach Mick Wadsworth was not despondent after the result.

Andy Monkhouse struck the woodwork with a second-half strike and Pools pegged the Owls back for long periods.

Wadsworth said: "A draw could have been fair, no doubt in my mind. They shaded the first half, but there wasn't much in it - you could put a cigarette paper between the sides.

"The goal was disappointing, but they way we responded with effort and integrity means we could have got something.

"It was one-way traffic for long periods and the momentum, good play and better opportunities were with us.

"I cannot fault the players for effort at all - it's been a fantastic start to the season and one result won't cloud our judgement."
