Steve McClaren failed to face the media on Sunday night as speculation over his future as Nottingham Forest manager continued.

Reports suggested the former England boss was locked in talks with chairman Nigel Doughty after another disappointing day at the City Ground - a 3-1 defeat to Birmingham putting a miserable seal on a horror week.

McClaren has endured a torrid run since taking over in June, epitomised by Tuesday's 5-1 hammering at Burnley.

That result raised speculation over the boss` future but, after David Pleat was removed from his part-time consultancy role in midweek, he appeared set to remain at the helm for the foreseeable future.

That has been thrown into doubt now, though, with McClaren not appearing for his post-match press conference following Sunday's loss.

After being dismissed as England manager following a poor run, McClaren rebuilt his reputation by guiding FC Twente to the Eredivisie title.

He traded Holland for Germany soon after, with an unsuccessful spell at Wolfsburg preceding him taking the reins at Forest.
