Toon to 'reopen negotiations' for £8m striker - reports

Newcastle will reportedly make another move to sign Sochaux striker Modibo Maiga in January.

According to The Mirror, the Magpies are set to 'reopen negotiations' with the French outfit in the hope of securing Maiga for around £8 million.

Newcastle had made a concerted effort to bring Maiga to St James' Park during the summer, and Alan Pardew is alleged to have been furious a deal could not be completed.

After Newcastle made an offer for the 24-year-old, Sochaux stalled on giving the Toon an answer until the transfer deadline neared - leaving Pardew fruitless in his attempts to sign a replacement for Andy Carroll.

But the Newcastle boss will try to sign the Mali international again when the transfer window reopens, and Maiga is interested in a move to Tyneside.

He said: "Newcastle? They are a very good club, I will not finish my career in Sochaux if I am scoring every week - that is the reality of football."

Pardew has promised that significant sums will be spent during the winter, after he was not sufficiently backed by the board in the transfer market during the summer.
