Ex-Liverpool target on Championship radar

Malian international midfielder Mahamadou Diarra is being linked with a shock move to Doncaster Rovers.

The former Real Madrid midfielder was linked with a move to Liverpool as recently as last summer, but after moving to AS Monaco in January, the 30-year-old is currently a free agent following relegation from Ligue 1 last term.

Dean Saunders has been at the Keepmoat Stadium less than a fortnight, but has already drafted in Pascal Chimbonda on a free transfer and Herita Ilunga on loan from West Ham United.

Frederic Piquionne has also been linked with a loan move to Yorkshire, whilst Newcastle United midfielder Dan Gosling is another player thought to be on the radar.

Club chairman Dean Ryan has bankrolled the moves thus far, and it's being reported in the English press that he would be willing to fund the 30-year-old's wage demands in order to bring the player to the Npower Championship.

Former Liverpool managers Rafael Benitez and Roy Hodgson were both thought to be interested in bringing the player to Anfield during their times on Merseyside.

Times appear to have changed for the African veteran though, and Liverpool now seems a far cry for the former Lyon midfielder.
