Chelsea and Liverpool have been alerted by the news that Athletico Madrid are prepared to sell Diego Godin, according to tuttomercato.
The Uruguayan defender, who stared at last year's World Cup was heavily linked with move to the Premier League during the summer, but deals couldn't be agreed.
However, with Athletico reportedly ready to drop their asking price to €11 million, Chelsea and Liverpool are ready to renew their interest.
Liverpool brought in international teammate Sebastian Coates during the summer transfer window to cover in defence, however, with Jamie Carragher's influence wavering and Daniel Agger's injury problems still affecting the rate of his appearances, Godin could be considered an option.
Chelsea meanwhile, despite being blessed in the centre-back position have endured problems in defence from the start of the season, and are expected to lose Brazilian defender Alex in the nest future.
Both Chelsea and Liverpool are likely to be able to offer the 25-year-old European football, with The Reds favourites to finish fourth in the Premier League this season.
