Arsene Wenger believes that the experience of the Arsenal squad will see the Gunners through the tough time they’re facing this season, with Robin Van Persie leading the charge to get the club’s season back on track.
Arsenal are currently 15th in the Barclays Premier League table, and have suffered from demoralising losses to Manchester United, with the side going down 8-2, and a come from behind 3-4 defeat to relegation favourites Blackburn.
But Wenger has insisted that with a top-class leadership group in charge of the squad, come the tough part of the season, Arsenal will pull through and show their true strength.
“Sometimes we are reproached for not having enough captains in our squad, now we have plenty,” Wenger told the Official Arsenal Magazine.
“Overall we have more experience and this could be important if we are in a strong position should we have interesting challenges in March or April. That could have a big part to play.”
Last season Arsenal came painfully close to pipping Manchester United for the title, but after losing to Barcelona in the Champions League round of 16 and to Birmingham in the Carling Cup final within a few weeks, the side lost their mental edge and dropped winnable matches to settle in fourth spot.
And while Wenger admitted that the Gunners were distraught by losing last season, the side have the experience now to see through those difficult periods.
"We got criticised a lot last season for not getting over the line, but I believe that we were so close, so, so close that it was unbelievable to accept,” he said.
“But we have added more experience. Also last year we lost important players in March and April because we went for all the trophies, so hopefully we have the squad to do it and this time it will happen.
Wenger also argued that he has complete faith in his deadline day signings to show their worth this season.
He added: “I’m very happy with the signings we made and my challenge now is to prove that I made the right decisions. I have great belief in the players I bought in and I am convinced they will prove me right.”
