Robin Van Persie will sign a new contract if Arsenal get some more signings in the January window, according to Gunners favourite Nigel Winterburn.
Van Persie’s contract runs out in 2013, and with Arsene Wenger hoping to avoid another Samir Nasri situation, the manager is keen to lock his skipper down to a long-term deal.
And as Van Persie contemplates a new deal at Arsenal, Winterburn insists that if Wenger brings in some marquee signings, the Dutchman will be persuaded to stay at the Emirates.
“Robin Van Persie is looking at the situation at Arsenal and he’s just seen two of the top players leave, so he’s not going to sign a new contract at this moment in time,” Winterburn told Talksport.
“How do you change that? Well, the team needs to start winning games and Arsene Wenger needs to strengthen the team, if he thinks he needs to, in January. Then again at the end of the season.
“If Arsene Wenger does that then Van Persie will sign again. If he doesn’t, then there’s always the possibility that Van Persie will say, ‘listen, I’ve given my all to Arsenal, but I’m now going to let my contact run down and at the end of it I need a fresh challenge’.”
