James Perch is not going to Derby on loan, Nigel Clough has claimed, with the Newcastle right-back needed at St James’ Park to cover for teammates’ injuries.
It was reported at the end of last week that Perch was close to a deal with Derby for a short term loan, but Clough quashed any speculation surrounding a move, claiming that while they had asked about Perch’s services, Alan Pardew had declined to let go of the 26-year-old.
"We are looking at the loan market and we asked about James but he is providing defensive cover at Newcastle. They have got a couple of injuries, so he cannot come out at the moment," Clough told the Derby Telegraph.
Newcastle are currently fourth on the Barclays Premier League table, and Pardew is reportedly hoping to keep hold of as much depth as possible in the squad to maintain their unbeaten run so far this season.
Perch has been fighting for a first team place in the Newcastle line-up with Charles N’Zogbia, but the former Nottingham Forest man could be used by Pardew in the Toon’s fixture with Wigan this weekend.
