Newcastle are closing in on a deal for Sochaux striker Modibo Maiga, it has been claimed.
According to L'Equipe, the north east giants and the Ligue 1 outfit have 'virtually agreed' a deal that will see a transfer completed in January.
Maiga went on strike during the summer in the hope of forcing a move to St James' Park after Newcastle had made a bid for his services.
However, Newcastle were unable to broker an agreement and Sochaux even threatened to report the Toon to UEFA due to the nature of their approach.
The Mali international has since resolved his differences with his current employers, but still retains an ambition to move to Newcastle.
It would now appear the 24-year-old will be granted his wish in the New Year as Alan Pardew looks to bring in a long-term replacement for Andy Carroll.
Maiga has scored four times in his last three appearances, following on from haul of 15 goals in 36 games last term.
