Arsenal target Yann M'Vila is like a more combative and faster version of Italian maestro Andrea Pirlo, according to Didier Deschamps.
The French midfield has been attracting plenty of interest in recent months, and is expected to be sold by Rennes next summer.
Arsenal were reported to have made a bid for M'Vila during the transfer window as Arsene Wenger scoured the market for midfield reinforcements.
However, Arsenal were unable to reach an agreement for the 21-year-old, and Andrey Arshavin has since expressed his disappointment M'Vila did not move to the Emirates Stadium.
And, if Deschamps' assessment of M'Vila is enough to go by, the Gunners have missed out on quite some player.
"He is neither a true defensive midfielder nor a pure central midfielder - he is both at the same time," said Deschamps, whose Marseille side take on Arsenal tonight.
"He is what the Italians call 'a director'. He is the man who sets the play from the back like Pirlo - but the big difference is M'Vila wins more balls than Pirlo and is faster.
"Yann has something rare for his age. He sees it all and he sees it before anyone else.
"Reading a game is the hardest thing. Then to capitalise you need the passing quality, the technique and speed. Yann has it all."
