Newcastle are leading Everton and Wigan in their pursuit of Javi Marquez, according to People, with the trio all hoping to land the £4 million rated defender in the January transfer window.
Marquez has starred for Espanyol since moving into the senior side in 2009, and the 25-year-old has become an undisputed starter for the side.
Newcastle have been targeting the Spaniard for some time, and with Espanyol hoping to do a cut price deal to get some money together for new purchases, the Toon believe they can outbid their rivals for Marquez’s signature.
While Everton and Wigan have shown interest, neither club has the same capacity to spend as Newcastle, with the north eastern club still holding onto a big portion of the £35 million that was charged for Andy Carroll when he left Newcastle for Liverpool in January.
