Wes Brown has called on the Sunderland squad to build on their positive momentum, with the side coming off a morale-boosting 2-1 win over Bolton as they prepare to face Aston Villa this weekend.
Brown was one of 12 new faces to sign for Sunderland in the summer transfer window, and while the squad have been promising, they haven’t quite lived up to expectations as yet, and are currently 14th in the Barclays Premier League table.
And while the match-up will be tough with Aston Villa, with former Black Cats star Darren Bent having defected to the Midlands under controversial circumstances, Brown believes this is the perfect opportunity for Sunderland to step up and show their worth.
"We have a good chance to build on the Bolton result now," Brown told Sunderland's official website.
"We've been playing well and we'll definitely be going into the game looking to win it - hopefully that'll be the case.
"They definitely have a good squad and have plenty of players who can hurt teams. But we are at home and we want to improve our record there. That's something we can do this Saturday."
Jack Colback insists that the match would not be about Bent’s return to the Stadium of Light, although he did admit that the Sunderland fans would be giving the star their two cents worth.
"I think he will get stick - and he will be expecting it," commented Colback.
"Personally, I thought he was great here. He was easy to get along with, the players liked him and he was a good player for the football club. It was unfortunate how it all panned out and how it ended.
"But as a club I think we've moved on since then. He has moved on, we have and we won't worry about him."
