Cesc Fabregas believes that criticism of Lionel Messi’s form is particularly unfair, with the former Arsenal star calling the Argentine a ‘born winner’.

While Messi has 10 La Liga goals so far this season, he missed a penalty against Sevilla to win the match last weekend and failed to score against Granada on Tuesday night.

But Fabregas insists that the 24-year-old is still leagues above every other footballer, with the playmaker going so far as to say he’d cut off his hand if Messi doesn’t win football’s highest individual honour this year.

“If we criticise Messi I can’t imagine what we can say about every other footballer,” Fabregas argued.

“I’m ready to cut off my hand that Messi will once again win the Ballon d’Or [for the third year running].”

Fabregas believes that Messi is a once in a generation player, and will continue to deliver the match winning performances that have taken Barcelona to the highest of heights in European football.

“To criticise Messi is unfair, what this player does we will never see the like of again,” he explained.

"Messi is the best and a born winner. [He] always wants to score goals, but that did not happen on Wednesday.

"However, the great thing about football is that the best players take no time in getting back on their feet. On Saturday he will have another chance to prove that he is the best."

Barcelona momentarily went to the top of La Liga table after their 1-0 win over Granada, but were toppled again last night by surprise outfit Levante, who beat Real Sociedad 3-2.
