Nicolas Gaitan is being eyed up by Manchester United, the Daily Telegraph claims, with the club preparing to pay the playmaker’s £40 million ‘trigger fee’ to bring him to Old Trafford.
Sir Alex Ferguson has long been an admirer of Gaitan, and the manager recently sent scouts to watch the 23-year-old in action for Benfica.
While Gaitan signed a new contract with the Portugese club this week, increasing his stay to five years and receiving a wage rise to £2 million a year, United are still keen to get hold of the starlet.
Benfica were unable to increase Gaitan’s release clause as part of his new deal, which keeps the midfielder in reach of United.
While the club are hoping to keep hold of Gaitan for the next 18 months, United are hoping to organise a deal by January.
