Liverpool idol Steve Nicol has revealed how his initial skepticism over the appointment of Kenny Dalglish has been replaced by optimism for the future.
Nicol played under Dalglish during his first spell at the club in the 80s, winning three league titles and two FA Cups during a successful tenure.
However, Nicol was one of those who was unsure over the appointment for Dalglish but says after a summer of spending and some stand-out results, he's hopeful he can repeat the trophy-laden success of his first spell.
“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t slightly concerned when Kenny took the job on,” Nicol said.
“But that soon disappeared when I saw how the team was playing. I said to myself ‘why did you ever doubt it? It was still the same Kenny.
“He’s some guy and there’s been a total turnaround under him.
“It’s a combination of three things with Kenny. Firstly, he knows his way around a football field blindfolded. Secondly, his eye for a player is spot on and thirdly, his man-management is fantastic.
“If you do well you’ll get a pat on the back but if you’re not doing your job properly he will tell you. He makes it clear he’s there to help you. When you’ve got those tools you’ve got a great chance of being successful.
“He has all the skills and he just needed the money to put the jigsaw together. The new owners have backed him and he’s been able to strengthen the squad.”
As well as positive results, which has seen Liverpool turn-over all of last season's top four since Dalglish took over in January, Nicol has hailed the side's style of play, an important asset to any Reds side being adored by the Kop.
“Style matters to Liverpool fans," Nicol added. "Certainly when I played under Kenny, especially at Anfield, we would get after the opposition from the start and put them under pressure.
"There would be no sitting back, trying to keep the shape, waiting for the other team to make a mistake and then breaking on them.
“Kenny has brought in the kind of talent suited to that high tempo game and the fans love to see it. The players enjoy that style as well and you can see the benefits.”
