Arsenal have identified Belgian defender Jan Vertonghen as their main target for the January transfer window reports the London Metro.
The 24-year-old Ajax stopper, who is rated at around £10million, would be tempted by the possibility of linking up with compatriot and international teammate Thomas Vermaelen in north London.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is a known admirer of Vertonghen, having been linked with him a number of times in the past - and will renew his interest in the New Year as he looks to resolve Arsenal's defensive frailties.
Having conceded 21 goals in their opening ten Barclays Premier League fixtures, including three in Saturday's 5-3 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, Wenger has made another defender a priority, following Per Mertesacker's slow start to life at the Emirates Stadium.
Vertonghen has previously spoken of his 'dream' to follow Vermaelen to Arsenal, and it is believed that Ajax will not stand in his way, providing the Gunners meet their valuation of a player who has represented his country on more than 30 occasions.
