Rafael van der Vaart believes that Tottenham can finally stake claim to being the side to beat in London, as Arsenal attempt to come back from their worst start in over 50 years.
Tottenham are currently fifth in the Barclays Prmeier League table, and despite Arsenal defeating Chelsea 5-3 at the weekend, the Gunners haven’t been able to overtake Spurs in the chase for a Champions League spot just yet.
And as Tottenham boast top form, undefeated in their last seven matches, Van der Vaart insisted that his side are superior to an squad without Cesc Fabregas or Samir Nasri.
"We are better than Arsenal,” he said.
"In our last seven games we have won six and drawn once. It's a long season, but I think we have a bigger and better squad."
Van der Vaart argued that Tottenham are in much better form than last season, where the side squandered a chance to qualify for the Champions League over Manchester City with inconsistent results in the second half of the campaign.
"Are we the best team in London? Maybe, but it's still early. We're in a good way. We are much better than we were last season,” he explained.
"Man City are the best team in the league and below them you have a lot of good teams and we are one of them."
Van der Vaart also fired a warning to City, saying that while they are playing sensationally well at the moment, their big egos could affect the team’s morale.
He said: "At the moment they are really good. They are winning games easily and how they played against Man United was impressive, but they also have the difficulty of a lot of egos so that could also be a problem.
"When you play for a big team, when you buy a lot of good players and a lot of players also aren't happy.
"Look at [Emmanuel] Adebayor. He is a great player for us, but he was not even in the squad at City and was training with the youngsters."
