A lack of first-team opportunities has caused Peter Lovenkrands to start planning for life away from Newcastle United, according to skysports.com.

The 31-year-old has made just one Barclays Premier League start this season, and has been completely overlooked for the past two fixtures.

Magpies boss Alan Pardew has been reluctant to make too many changes to a squad that has made an unbeaten start to the 2011-12 campaign, leaving the Danish striker out in the cold.

Lovenkrands has been told he still has a future at St James' Park, and Newcastle chiefs are planning to open negotiations over a new deal - but the former Rangers forward feels it may be time to move on.

"I've talked to the coach and he would like to extend my contract, but I cannot wait for that," he confirmed to TV.dk. "In January, I can talk to whoever I want, so my agent is working to find me another club.

"There are lots of things I'd like, but I'm keeping my cards close to my chest."

The Newcastle star knows from past experience that life as a free agent can often be difficult, so Lovenkrands isn't ruling out the possibility of leaving the Magpies if an offer comes along in the New Year.

"There have been talks with the club about an extension," he added. "But it's not something that happens before January or next summer, so right now we're looking for other options."
