Sunderland manager Steve Bruce is hoping Simon Mignolet can recover quickly from his nasty facial injury picked up against Aston Villa at the weekend.

A collision during the score draw at the Stadium of Light has left the Belgian with a fractured nose and eye socket.

Further tests will be run on the area once swelling has subsided, but Bruce is hoping his No.1 can make a speedy recovery and that new man Keiren Westwood can take his opportunity with both hands.

"Simon had a horrible facial injury, as bad as I've ever seen - and I should know," Bruce said.

"We wish Simon well and if anyone can come back stronger, it's him."

"Keiren has been knocking on the door, I've told him to be patient and now his chance is just around the corner," he added.

"We couldn't wish for a more able deputy. Keiren is an established goalkeeper who's been itching to play in the Barclays Premier League for years.

"Last weekend didn't faze him and I'm sure the next game won't either."
