Trotters thrash Potters at home

Published Add your comment

Bolton ended their miserable run of 13 defeats in their last 16 Barclays Premier League matches with an emphatic victory over Stoke City - who inflicted the same scoreline on the Trotters in last season's FA Cup semi-final encounter.

Tony Pulis' Potters side, have a right to feel a little aggrieved at the manner of how the deadlock was broken, when referee Howard Webb allowed Ivan Klasnic to take a quick free-kick, teeing up Bolton captain Kevin Davies to slot home.

Chris Eagles made it 2-0 with a superb strike after an Asmir Begovic mis-kick, before Klasnic added a third with a well-taken shot from 18-yards.

Eagles grabbed his second, and Bolton's fourth with a delicate dinked finish, before Klasnic, who, not wanting to be left behind completed the rout, when he headed home the fifth.

A strangely subdued Stoke side, who sorely missed the energy and composure of injured winger Matthew Etherington, were desperate to avoid a fourth consecutive league loss following a midweek UEFA Europa League match.

But their aspirations were limited to a few dangerous set-pieces and goalmouth scrambles, with Peter Crouch missing perhaps their best chance of the game with the score poised at 1-0, and Stoke rarely threatened after that.
