David Villa is one of the most important players for Barcelona, according to Pep Guardiola, with the striker scoring for the club last night against Segunda B side L’Hospitalet in the Copa del Rey.

Barcelona came away from the match with a 1-0 victory over their opposition, and while Guardiola was disappointed that the Catalan giants couldn’t take a bigger win, he insisted that Villa is an integral part of the star-studded squad.

"He gives us a lot. For me, David is indispensable. I liked how he played tonight [Wednesday] even more than how he has in the past," Guardiola said.

“I am very happy with him. He has become a very incisive player and had lots of shots on goal, although their goalkeeper was fantastic.

“David always gives us everything and we don’t judge him purely on his goals but by what he brings to the team.”

Guardiola said that he had hoped for a more convincing performance from Barcelona, with the side having to juggle the domestic cup competition with La Liga games, Champions League matches and the upcoming Club World Cup.

“The game was very intense and we had to work hard,” he said. “We wanted more than one goal, especially since I don’t know what condition my players will be in for the second leg after we arrive back from Japan.

“We had a lot of shots from outside the area but were unable to get down the wings to put in more crosses.

"[L’Hospitalet] have a lot of heart, and their keeper was simply fantastic. We struggled a little bit in our attempts to break their defensive system down."

Barcelona face the side again on December 21st at Camp Nou, and will be hoping to go through to the final 16 in their quest to challenge for the treble and continue their success.
