Athletic Bilbao midfielder Javi Martinez - a target for Liverpool and Chelsea - is 'proud' to hear of interest in his signature from Manchester United.

The Spaniard captained his nation to under-21 glory in the summer and is regarded as one of the country's finest young prospects.

According to the Daily Mail, the 23-year-old has been attracting interest from Anfield, Stamford Bridge and Old Trafford, and Athletic have taken the step of writing a release clause of £34 million in his contract.

However, despite the the links to United, Chelsea and Liverpool, Martinez is content to remain in Bilbao for the time being.

"When you hear of interest from United, you feel proud but I'm happy at Athletic."

Sir Alex Ferguson, meanwhile, is reported to be focused on signing Fiorentina midfielder Riccardo Montolivo in January.

The United boss has also been linked with a swoop for Mario Gotze - a reported target for Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish - while Christian Eriksen, also liked by Andre Villas-Boas, is alleged to be on his radar.
