Wigan want to resolve Liverpool and Arsenal target Hugo Rodallega's contract dispute before the January transfer window opens.
The Colombian striker's current deal expires next summer, but he has yet to give any indication that he wants to reamin at the DW Stadium.
"We want it resolved before the January window," said Wigan chief executive Jonathan Jackson.
"Hugo's still assessing his options but we hope he will stay."
According to the Daily Mail, both Liverpool and Arsenal are watching the situation of the £15 million-rated forward with interest, and could make moves when the time is right.
Both Arsene Wenger and Kenny Dalglish are thought to be keen to further reinforce their goalscoring departments, although Rodallega has hardly put himself in the shop window this season.
Meanwhile, Arsenal are reportedly pursuing FC Koln hotshot Lukas Podolksi and Barcelona star David Villa is said to be on the Liverpool radar.
However, neither Arsenal or Liverpool are thought to have identified a striker as their top priority in the New Year.
