Manchester City's plethora of international players endured mixed fortunes on a weekend packed full of action.
In competitive matches, Pablo Zabaleta played 90 minutes for Argentina in a disappointing 1-1 draw against Bolivia. Sergio Aguero missed out after picking up a groin strain in training, and the result is a setback to the nation's 2014 World Cup qualifying hopes ahead of a tricky trip to Colombia on Tuesday.
“The Colombians have more quality up front. It will be anything but an easy match for us, that’s for sure. There’s a long way to go, and you never know what might happen. All we can do for now is focus on the next game and see what happens," said the full back.
The Euro 2012 play-off matches didn't go the way City striker Edin Dzeko or defender Stefan Savic would have hoped, with both facing uphill battles to qualify for next summer's tournament in Poland & Ukraine.
Dzeko missed a late chance for Bosnia in a 0-0 draw against Portugal, and will now need to produce an upset in Lisbon to claim a place in the tournament proper.
Savic, meanwhile, played left-back for Montenegro in a 2-0 defeat against the Czech Republic. A huge upset is now needed to see the minnows progress.
The Citizens players faced much better in friendly action, with Mario Balotelli scoring a stunner in the 2-0 win against Poland - his first for the Azzurri.
"This great game by Balotelli counts for a lot because other than the goal he played an excellent match. Congratulations to him and the team," said manager Cesare Prandelli.
Vincent Kompany got over Belgium's failure to qualify for Euro 2012 with a 2-1 win over Romania, whilst Aleksandar Kolarov saw red for Serbia in a 2-0 defeat to Mexico.
The big fixture at Wembley produced a shock for David Silva, with World and European champions Spain coming undone against England.
Joe Hart, Joleon Lescott and James Milner all started for the Three Lions, with Gareth Barry and Adam Johnson coming off the bench for the Three Lions in a 1-0 win.
Elsewhere, both Yaya Toure and Kolo Toure started for the Ivory Coast in a 1-1 draw against South Africa.
"It was a fantastic friendly and I think 1-1 was a fair result," said Yaya.
