Newcastle United have agreed a new three and a half year deal to keep Sammy Ameobi at St James’ Park, ending Chelsea’s reported interest with the club.

Younger brother of Toon regular Shola Ameobi, Sammy has impressed with his performances this year, which have seen him begin to make more of an impact in the first team.

Chelsea were closely monitoring the situation of the England Under-21 international, and with his contract coming to an end this summer, Stamford Bridge boss Andre Villas-Boas sensed an opportunity with the player free to speak with other clubs come January.

Ameobi, who has also played for Nigeria at youth level, has featured seven times for Alan Pardew’s side this season and is pushing for a starting berth.

He spoke with The Chronicle: "As a young player all you want to do is have as many opportunities as you can for the first team, and I am grateful to the manager for giving me these chances.

"I am enjoying every minute of it and I will continue to do that. It gives you an incredible buzz to hear your name chanted.

"I have supported the club since I was a boy and when Shola came into the first team, so playing for Newcastle is a dream come true."
