Real Madrid are said to be preparing a shock offer to lure Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney away from Old Trafford this summer.
Jose Mourinho is a known admirer of the Manchester United forward, and club president Florentino Perez is said to be hoping to tempt Rooney to follow in the footsteps of his former United team-mate Christiano Ronaldo, who swapped Old Trafford for the Bernabeu in 2009 for a world record £80 million.
With Madrid expected to fail in their bid for Santos superstar Neymar, who is set to join fierce rivals Barcelona over the summer, Rooney is the next man on the Real Madrid hit list, with Athletic Bilbao’s desire to keep hold of striker Fernando Llorente likely to be tested if the Manchester United striker is unable to be tempted to move from the Premier League, according to Spanish website eleconomista.es.
Reports last year suggested Los Merengues were ready to offer £95 million for Rooney after the United forward expressed a desire to leave Old Trafford. A U-turn swiftly followed, with Rooney signing an improved contract last year.
Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport suggest the offer will be a more modest €55 this time round, after Rooney failed to hit his best form last season for the Red Devils.
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is highly unlikely to sanction the sale of his best player.
