Anti-racism groups and players have attacked the remarks, with former England captain David Beckham today describing them as "appalling".

Arsene Wenger has said there is work to do to stamp out racism in English football, calling for a zero tolerance policy for abuse on and off the field.

Meanwhile, Chelsea and England captain is facing the possibility of a police charge for racially abusing Anton Ferdinand last month.
