Wayne Rooney is expected to face Benfica in the Champions League tomorrow night, despite missing training ahead of the fixture.

Sir Alex Ferguson opted to rest the England international after picking up a 'knock' in the 1-0 win against Swansea in the Barclays Premier League, a result which keeps the pressure on 'noisy neighbours' Manchester City at the top of the league.

Focus has quickly turned to European action for the Red Devils though, and Ferguson acknowledges that the visit of the Portuguese powerhouse is crucial for his side after losing in a similar situation in 2005.

"It's a big game, a game that we recognise as a real European game with the history between us," said Ferguson during his pre-match press conference.

"We lost our last encounter over there 2-1. Our performance in the first game was good."

Chris Smalling will again miss out for United with a foot injury, but one player who won't be filling in at right back is Rooney.

The striker is enjoying a new lease of life in centre midfield at Old Trafford, and whilst he's happy to play anywhere for the cause, moving to full-back might be a step too far.

"I love it. I don't care where I play. I'm just happy to be on the pitch, I'll play anywhere," said the 26-year-old.

"Well, probably not right-back, no. But midfield is a role where you can get on the ball and influence the game a bit more."
