Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe has a big role to play for the club, according to club legend Clive Allen.

The 29-year-old has made 14 appearances this season, with six of those coming from the bench as the England international has played second fiddle to loanee Emmanuel Adebayor.

But with six goals this term, Defoe's limited game time has impacted on his ability to make an impression, and Allen says the forward has much to offer.

"Jermain has been very unfortunate," he said. "He came for back pre-season looking sharp and in good shape. But Harry has made his decisions in terms of who has been playing and the results been fantastic.

"It's a nice problem to have, but we know the quality Jermain has. He's a fantastic player and goalscorer and he'll certainly play his part."

The form of Adebayor, currently on loan from Manchester City, has left Defoe out in the cold at Spurs, but as yet, no deal has been agreed to retain the Togolese striker past the end of the season.

The player's wage demands is a major stumbling block for the club, and Allen says he hopes to see more of Adebayor in the future.

"I'm not sure what the long-term situation is. He's here with us this season and he's been a breath of fresh air.

"He's got a smile on his face, he's enjoying his football and loving the way the team is playing."
