Arsenal eye Chelsea defender target - reports

Arsenal are keen on signing Nottingham Forest's teenage defender Jamal Lascelles - who has also attracted interest from Chelsea reports the Daily Mail.

The promising England U19 international has earned rave reviews for a series of impressive performances in the Npower Championship this season, and is tipped to leave the City Ground when the transfer window reopens in January.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is renowned for bringing exciting young talent to the Emirates Stadium, and nurturing players with a view to developing them into stars of the future.

Arsenal chief scout Steve Rowley has been sent to run the rule over Lascelles, and compile a comprehensive report ahead of a proposed £2million bid in the New Year.

However, Wenger is likely to face competition for the starlet's signature from a host of Barclays Premier League clubs, with Blues boss Andre Villas-Boas also poised to make an offer.

The Chelsea chief is under intense pressure at Stamford Bridge, but his appointment was deemed a long-term move for the west London club - and so the Portuguese tactician is expected to be given further funds to continue assembling an exciting new squad.

Lascelles is yet to comment on speculation surrounding his future, but Arsenal remain confident they can entice him to north London over a move to Chelsea.
