Ferguson claims interest in England U21 defender

Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson says his father Sir Alex Ferguson is interested in signing full-back Ryan Bennett.

The England Under-21 international moved to London Road in 2009, and made 37 League One appearances last season as the Posh won promotion via the play-offs.

And according to Ferguson junior, Manchester United have been keeping an eye on the defender.

"I spoke to my dad and he likes Ryan Bennett, always has. I can understand the interest," Ferguson said.

"It's no secret that a lot of clubs are looking at Ryan.

"I'm staying silent on who exactly is interested, but unless we get a massive offer there is no way the chairman would sell.

"We'll ignore the speculation and get on with our jobs. Ryan is a sensible lad who won't be affected by any of the speculation."

To add fuel to the fire, chairman Darragh MacAnthony has suggested United could be on of several clubs in the mix for the 21-year-old.

"Had an interesting chat with gaffer. Seems his 'pops' could be in the mix with other clubs for a certain player," he said on Twitter.

"But Posh has never been a selling club under me unless it's what's needed so relax all!"

United reinforced their squad with youth during the summer, with Phil Jones and David de Gea joining the club.
